Unless you have a good reason, I wouldn’t automatically put social media links on your business website.

That’s probably not what you’d expect to hear from someone who builds business websites and works in digital marketing. We’re often told to add Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube icons to every website. But have you ever stopped to ask why?

Your Website Has a Job to Do

Imagine a potential customer searches Google for a service you provide. They find your business, click through to your website and start reading. They’re interested. They’re checking your services, looking for reassurance and deciding whether to contact you.

You’ve already done the hard work of getting them this far. Your website could be the final stop before that visitor becomes an enquiry.

Now imagine they spot an Instagram icon and click it. Suddenly they’re no longer on your website. They might look at one of your posts, then another video catches their attention, and before long they’re watching something completely unrelated to your business.

The problem isn’t necessarily that they’ve changed their mind about your service. They’ve simply become distracted. That potential customer may never return.

Social Media Platforms Have a Different Goal

Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube encourage people to keep discovering, scrolling, watching and interacting. Social media can be fantastic for awareness, relationships and building trust.

But social media platforms want people to keep using their platforms. Your website should make it easier for people to become customers. Those are different goals.

Think of Your Website as the Destination

The customer journey we’re aiming for is Social media → Your website → Enquiry → Customer.

Not: Google → Your website → Instagram → funny videos → customer forgotten.

It’s a light-hearted example, but it’s easy to recognise the behaviour. Your website shouldn’t compete with social media for the visitor’s attention. It should help them move towards a decision, whether that’s calling, requesting a quote, booking or completing a form.

In website design, we call this conversion rate optimisation (CRO). It means improving a page so more visitors complete a useful action. Sometimes the improvement isn’t adding something. It’s removing something unnecessary. For practical ways to improve this, see our guide to turning website visitors into enquiries.

But Doesn’t Social Media Help People Get to Know, Like and Trust Your Business?

Absolutely. And that’s one of the best reasons to use social media.

People often want to learn more about a business before spending their money. They might look at your Facebook page, watch your videos, read customer comments or browse your Instagram photos. All of that can help them feel more confident about choosing you.

But here’s the question I would ask: Why do we need to send someone away from our website to build that trust?

If your social media accounts are properly branded, use a consistent business name and are easy to discover, people who want to investigate your business can find them. They may even have checked your social media before visiting your website.

And for people who haven’t? Why not show them what they need to know right where they are?

Feature genuine customer reviews. Show examples of your work. Embed a useful video or highlight your best social content directly on the page. A helpful business video can also build confidence without sending visitors away.

You can help people get to know, like and trust your business without asking them to leave.

When Does Linking to Social Media Make Sense?

There are exceptions.

Perhaps your Instagram portfolio is an important part of how customers evaluate your work. Maybe people need to see your regularly updated events, participate in your community or watch detailed demonstrations on YouTube.

In those situations, a social media link may genuinely help someone make a better decision.

But I’d still ask two questions:

  • Could we show that information directly on our website?
  • Will this link help someone take the next step, or introduce another distraction?

If the link has a clear purpose, keep it. If it doesn’t, perhaps it’s better left out.

The Principle

Social media is excellent for attracting attention and building relationships. Your website is where we want that interest to turn into business.

Make your social media easy to discover, but don’t automatically make it an exit door from your website.

Because once someone is interested enough to visit your website, our job is to help them move forward, not send them back into an endless stream of distractions.

A Simple Question for Business Owners

Take a look at your website and find every social media icon. Ask yourself: Does clicking this link help my visitor become a customer, or give them another opportunity to leave?

If you can’t explain how that link helps someone make a decision, perhaps it doesn’t need to be there.

The Bigger Lesson

A great Local Lead Website isn’t about including every feature available. It’s about understanding what your customer needs and making the next step as easy as possible.

Every button, link and section should earn its place. And while outbound social links aren’t automatically proven to reduce conversions, unnecessary exits are worth questioning and testing.

Use social media to attract attention. Use your website to turn that attention into business.

What do you think? Should business websites link to every social account, or keep visitors focused on the enquiry?
